Pied Kinfisher Pair

Pukeko are a common sight all around New Zealand, unlike their shy African cousins. This portrait depicts their curious nature.
Australasian Gannet
Australasian gannets, also known as Tākapu, is a large seabird of the gannet family called Sulidae. This resting adult was photographed at Muriwai gannet colony on the west coast of New Zealand near Auckland.
Kingfisher Conversation
Pied Kingfishers (Ceryle rudis) have interesting breeding behaviour. They sometimes breed co-operatively with the breeding pair being assisted by non-breeding birds. These birds may be related young or unrelated older birds. This photo was taken at Intaka Island in Cape Town, South Africa. I tried to capture the constant interaction of the breeding group with this photo.
Swift Tern in black and white
Swift Tern in flight at Milnerton Lagoon, Cape Town, South Africa. Black and white is the perfect way to show these beautiful birds.
Pied Kingfisher Breeding Group
These three Pied Kingfishers (Ceryle rudis) are part of a breeding group at Intaka Island in Cape Town. Pied kingfishers sometimes breed co-operatively with the breeding pair being assisted by non-breeding birds. The helpers may be related young or unrelated older birds. The Intaka Island birds may be some of the most photographed birds in the world due to the well located hide. I tried to capture them in a slightly different way by using a 600mm lens through reeds. Due to the shallow depth of field and constant movement of the reeds it creates a background and foreground blur that makes the birds stand out.
Hartlaub's Gull
Hartlaub's gull in flight at Milnterton Lagoon in Cape Town, South Africa. It took many hours of patient waiting and photographing to get this photo. Finally conditions, tide and bird activity all aligned.
Portrait of an Australasian Gannet
Captured at Muriwai beach gannet colony on the West Coast of New Zealand near Auckland.
Sociable Weaver
These tiny birds build the maginificent grass nest colonies that are so much part of the arid Kalahari landscape.
Grey-headed Gull
Sometimes getting close is as easy as ordering fish and chips. This grey-headed gull joined us for lunch at a cafe in Mosselbay, South Africa.
